The Nokia 2.3, a budget smartphone from HMD Global, has been launched in Kenya, aiming to capture a significant share of the country's affordable smartphone market.

Announced just last week in Egypt, the device is priced at Kshs 12,300, making it a direct competitor to market leader Transsion Holdings' brands, including Tecno, Infinix, and itel.

According to Pranav Shroff, HMD Global's General Manager for Global Portfolio Planning, the company is targeting the over 200 million smartphone buyers in the Kshs 10,000 to 15,000 bracket.

The Nokia 2.3 features a 6.2-inch HD+ display, a MediaTek Helio A22 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB memory, and 32 GB internal storage, expandable up to 512GB using a microSD card.

The device also boasts a 4,000mAh battery, which HMD Global claims can last up to 2 days, as well as several AI features, including the Android Pie Assisted Battery feature and 'advanced imaging' for better low-light shots.

Like other Nokia smartphones launched this year, the Nokia 2.3 comes with a dedicated button for triggering the Google Assistant.

Although it runs on Android 9 Pie, HMD Global has promised that the Android 10 update is on the way.
