According to the SACCO subsector Demographics Study Report 2019, published on December 11, 2019, men make up 60.65% of the 4.78 million members in the DT SACCO industry, while women account for 34.23%. The gender of approximately 5.12% of members remains undisclosed.

These findings are at odds with the national population demographics, where women slightly outnumber men. The 2019 National Census reported a total enumerated population of 47,564,296, with 23,548,056 males and 24,014,716 females.

The report attributes the dominance of men in DT SACCOs to their control of key socio-economic activities, such as agricultural production and formal employment opportunities.

Interestingly, the youth, defined as members between 18 and 35 years old, account for 30.86% of the total DT SACCO membership, dispelling the notion that SACCO membership is not for the young.

The report provides valuable insights into the age distribution and gender composition of deposit-taking SACCO members in Kenya, highlighting the significance of Farmers'-based DT-SACCOs, which account for 47.81% of all DT SACCO members.
