President Uhuru Kenyatta's call for peace and reconciliation in the country has seen Jubilee Party secretary-general Raphael Tuju intervene in the ongoing impeachment proceedings at the Kiambu County Assembly.
Mr. Tuju prevailed upon a section of members of the Kiambu County Assembly to drop the motions, saying they were portraying President Uhuru Kenyatta in bad light.
The motion to impeach Deputy Governor James Nyoro was moved by Witethie MCA Julius Macharia Taki last week, while that of Governor Ferdinand Waititu was moved by Ndenderu Ward Rep Solomon Kinuthia.
Mr. Taki had accused the deputy governor of gross violation of the Constitution and the County Governments Act, citing abuse of office and physical and mental incapacity to perform the functions of the deputy governor.
However, after a meeting with Mr. Tuju at the Jubilee Headquarters in Pangani, Nairobi, Mr. Taki decided to withdraw the motion against Mr. Nyoro, citing the party's request for reconciliation.
"Following a consultative meeting of Members of the County Assembly from the Jubilee Party held yesterday, Monday, December 9, 2019, at Jubilee Party headquarters, the Jubilee Party requested the Members of the County Assembly to seek reconciliation as a way of resolving the issue of pending removal of the governor and the deputy governor," reads a letter from Mr. Taki to the Speaker.
"Further, the party reached out to the sponsors of the two motions and urged them to withdraw the same. In view of the above and pursuant to provisions of Standing Order 71(2), I wish to withdraw the motion of notice on removal of the deputy governor," the letter adds.
However, Youth executive Karungo Thangwa, a close ally of Mr. Waititu, wondered why the removal of the motion to impeach Mr. Nyoro was selective and did not apply to the governor.
"We now wait to see whether the mover of the motion to impeach Waititu will follow suit," said Mr. Thangwa.
