Published on December 11, 2019, the Kenyan government has taken swift action to address the devastating effects of recent floods, allocating Ksh6.1 billion ($61 million) to restore damaged infrastructure.

State spokesman Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna announced the government's plan to resettle those displaced by the floods within the next three months, providing essential provisions to those currently residing in camps.

According to Oguna, many individuals in camps are hesitant to relocate due to their ownership of title deeds for the land their homes are built on. He emphasized the importance of facilitating their resettlement, stating, "Many of those in camps are reluctant to entirely move from their homes since they own title deeds for the land their homes are built...since disasters are bound to strike anywhere and we cannot prevent these disasters from happening, the most noble thing to do is to facilitate their resettlement should they wish to move back to their homes and lands."

The unusual weather conditions causing the floods have been attributed to a phenomenon in the Indian Ocean, resulting in irregular fluctuations of the sea surface's temperatures. Meteorologists warn that these rains will likely persist until the end of December or the first week of the new year in different regions.
