On December 11, 2019, Bank of Uganda issued a warning to the public regarding defaced currency notes.
The warning comes after a trend on social media where photos of banknotes with political messages were shared, including "Vote Bobi Wine 2021" and "Vote Museveni 2021".
According to the Bank of Uganda Governor, Emmanuel Mutebile, stamping, writing, or making markings on currency notes interferes with the security features that establish the authenticity of genuine currency notes.
"The public is advised to accept only those notes that bear features as designed by Bank of Uganda," Mr. Mutebile said.
Individuals involved in defacing or accepting defaced notes risk losing the value of their banknotes, the Governor added.
