Published on December 11, 2019, Nairobi Senator Johnston Sakaja has sparked a heated debate on the impartiality of the Senate in grilling governors who have failed the accountability test.
Senator Sakaja firmly stated that senators ought not, should not, and must not defend governors accused of corruption in court, citing a conflict of interest.
His sentiments come as the representation of Governor Mike Sonko by Senators Mutula Kilonzo Jr and Kipchumba Murkomen has ignited a heated debate on the impartiality of the Senate.
Senator Sakaja pointed out that it is ugly to stand by the side of convicted governors, saying the very picture portrayed by the blind move is an insult to the spirit of devolution and the constitution of Kenya.
He stated that it is an outright violation of the law to pretend to be empathetic with the governors facing corruption charges, adding that they should boldly be left to carry their own cross.
Senator Sakaja clarified that their primary role is to protect the welfare and interests of the Wanjiku, saying participating in any contrary exercise would be betraying the very citizens they vowed to protect.
He blasted senators Mutula Kilonzo Jr and Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, for representing Nairobi governor in court, wondering how the same senators will grill him, should his case be brought before the senate.
Senator Sakaja posed the question, 'How will my colleagues Mutula Jr and Murkomen sit and debate with impartiality, should Sonko's case end up in the senate?'
