On a fateful day in December 2018, Mildred, a 20-year-old house girl, finished her KCSE exams and started helping a distant relative with house chores in Kitengela, earning KSh 8,000 monthly.
However, things took a surprising turn when Mildred started dating Ben, a boda boda operator from Machakos county, whom she had met through her employer.
Ben, a habitual 'hunter' who preyed on house helps of his clients, had been using his delivery services to get close to Mildred, and their relationship soon turned intimate.
But their secret was soon exposed when Mildred's employer, Javan, discovered them in a compromising position in the children's bedroom.
Enraged, Javan descended on Ben with his leather belt and lashed him severally on his bare back, while also scolding Mildred for her involvement.
It later emerged that Ben had a history of preying on house helps, and Javan credited a native doctor, Ndumba wa Ndumba, with helping him catch the cheating couple.
Ndumba, a renowned herbalist, has a reputation for nabbing cheating spouses and thieves, and his services were sought by Javan to help him deal with the situation.
