On December 11, 2019, US House Democrats submitted two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, marking a significant step in the impeachment process.
The charges, which are expected to be voted on by the House of Representatives next week, accuse Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
According to the articles, Trump is alleged to have used his presidential powers for personal and political gain by pressuring Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 US election.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler stated, "We must be clear: No one, not even the president, is above the law."
Trump has dismissed the charges as "ridiculous" and maintained a fighting posture, blasting the impeachment process and renewing his claim that he is the victim of a "witch hunt".
The White House has called the impeachment effort a "pathetic attempt" to overturn the 2016 election result.
Should Trump be impeached, he faces a January trial in the US Senate, where Republicans hold a majority.
