On December 10, 2019, the High Court in Siaya ruled that two brothers, Franklin Joel Luta and Victor Ogola Luta, would remain in police custody for eight days and undergo a mental assessment in connection with the murder of journalist Eric Oloo.

Eric Oloo, a 40-year-old correspondent for The Star newspaper, was found dead on a blood-soaked bed in the house of Chief Inspector Sabina Kerubo in November.

A post-mortem report revealed that Oloo died after being hit with a blunt object on the head and abdomen.

The two brothers, who are accused of beating Oloo to death, appeared before Judge Roseline Aburili but did not take a plea.

Prosecutor David Okach requested the court to order a mental examination for the duo before trial, and Judge Aburili directed the police to produce the suspects in court for a plea on December 18.

The judge also ordered the State to provide a lawyer to the suspects after they claimed they could not afford to pay for one.
