On December 10, 2019, a chaotic scene unfolded in Jersey City's Greenville neighborhood when two individuals opened fire near a convenience store, leaving one police officer dead and two others, along with a bystander, wounded.

According to the Hudson County prosecutor's office, the officer was shot in the afternoon, and the area quickly became a war zone as dozens of law enforcement officers responded to the scene.

For over an hour, the sound of gunfire echoed through the streets, with helicopters circling overhead and police officers swarming the area, evacuating residents and business owners to safety.

The shooting occurred on Martin Luther King Drive near Bayview Avenue, just west of New York City across the Hudson River.

Two suspects were barricaded inside the convenience store, officials said.

Gov. Philip D. Murphy released a statement expressing his support for the Jersey City Police Department and the residents affected by the shooting.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the F.B.I. and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the scene, treating the incident as an 'active shooter' situation.

Twelve public schools in the area were shut down and placed on lockdown, with schools in neighboring Bayonne also ordered to shelter in place due to the police activity.
