Sakaja Criticizes Colleagues for Defending Sonko in Corruption Case ¶
On December 10, 2019, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja expressed his disappointment with his colleagues for defending Governor Mike Sonko in a corruption case.
Sonko was arrested on December 6, 2019, in Taita Taveta County and flown to Nairobi by helicopter, where he was presented to the Milimani Law Courts to face charges.
According to Sakaja, the role of senators is to protect public resources, and it is not right for them to defend individuals accused of corruption.
"It is unfortunate to see senators representing Governor Sonko in court, while there are cases of corruption in Nairobi County that need to be addressed," Sakaja said.
He added that public officials who are accused of corruption should be prepared to face the law and that the days of impunity are over.

Senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Mutula Kilonzo Junior (Makueni) are among those who have defended Sonko in court.
Sakaja questioned their actions, saying that it is not right for them to defend Sonko while there are cases of corruption in Nairobi County that need to be addressed.
