George Mng'ong'o, a pioneering figure in Kenyan rugby, has left a lasting legacy in the sport. Born in 1955, Mng'ong'o was a talented scrum-half who played for the Mean Machine side that won the Kenya Cup in 1977.
On December 10, 2019, Mwamba Rugby Club's President Alvas Onguru announced that Mng'ong'o had passed away due to a cardiac arrest at his home in South B estate, Nairobi. He was 64 years old.
According to Onguru, Mng'ong'o lived alone in the house and was found dead over the weekend. The club's president stated that they will be meeting daily at Nairobi Railway Club to help raise funds for the funeral.
Contributions can be sent to former Mwamba chairman Dave Mshila on 0718 318 435. Onguru emphasized that this is a club initiative, awaiting the family's directive.
As the rugby fraternity mourns the loss of Mng'ong'o, they remember his contributions to the sport. He formed Mwamba Rugby Club in 1978 alongside Thomas Oketch and the Late Absalom 'Bimbo' Mutere.
