On December 10, 2019, Siaya High Court judge Roseline Aburili ordered the detention of two brothers, Victor Ogola Luta and Franklin Joel Luta, for eight more days pending mental examination in connection with the murder of The Star Newspaper journalist Erick Oloo.

The brothers, who are yet to take plea to murder charges, were supposed to be taken for mental examination, according to prosecutor David Okach.

Justice Aburili directed that the suspects be processed for the mental examination on December 17 at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.

She further directed that the two suspects be provided with a lawyer once the case begins, after they informed the court that they could not afford to hire a lawyer on their own.

Five people, including Ugunja deputy OCS Sabina Kerubo, have since been arrested in connection with the journalist's murder.
