On Tuesday morning, a 47-year-old night guard was brutally killed in a robbery at Imara Supermarket in Chavakali market, Vihiga County.
The incident occurred at around 4:30am when a group of armed robbers attacked the supermarket, leaving another guard with serious injuries.
Vihiga County Police Commander Hassan Barua confirmed the incident, stating that the robbers assaulted the two night guards before breaking into the supermarket.
According to Barua, the robbers used sharp objects to cut the victims, and preliminary investigations suggest that they broke into the supermarket through the back-door.
Police officers on patrol rushed to the scene and moved the body and the injured guard to the County Referral Hospital in Mbale.
This was the second time the supermarket has been attacked in under a year, with a customer being killed in a similar attack last year.
Barua warned individuals planning to engage in criminal activities, especially during the festive period, stating that the police have deployed enough security officers on high alert in all parts of the county.
He also revealed that the police unit is working closely with members of Nyumba Kumi and Community Policing outfits to enhance security during the festive season.
A watchman at the market, who wished to remain anonymous, blamed the tragic death of their colleague on security lapses in the area.
