Chelsea's manager, Frank Lampard, has acknowledged the significance of their upcoming Champions League match against Lille, which will be their biggest test of the season so far.
On Monday, Lampard emphasized the importance of securing a home win against Lille, which would be a crucial step towards reaching the knockout stage.
Chelsea are currently third in Group H with eight points, tied with Valencia and two points behind leaders Ajax Amsterdam. Despite being unbeaten away, the London side has struggled at home, picking up only one point in two European games this season.
Lampard's side can qualify for the last 16 with a win over Lille or a draw if Ajax beats Valencia.
Speaking at a news conference, Lampard acknowledged the challenges his team has faced, including a tough group and a young squad. He emphasized the importance of these tests in football, saying, 'You don't want to lose games or predict losing games but the way we are... this was never going to be a plain sailing, or 'Invincible'. Teams and individuals need these tests, it comes with football so it's a test for all of us.'
Lampard also addressed the recent 3-1 league defeat by Everton, stating that it would not change his transfer window plans. He emphasized the need for balance in the team, saying, 'You have a strong squad which I believe we have, but you have to look at 'can we strengthen?' And there will be times... January or next summer, when we will, look at the opportunity to strengthen because we want to improve.'
Chelsea received an injury boost with defender Antonio Rudiger returning from injury, but fellow centre back Fikayo Tomori and striker Olivier Giroud remain sidelined.
