On December 10, 2019, a source confirmed that Didier Deschamps' contract as coach of the world champions France has been extended through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Deschamps, a former France captain who led the team to World Cup glory in 1998, has been at the helm of Les Bleus since summer 2012.

His contract extension was dependent on France qualifying for the 2020 European championships, a condition that was met when Deschamps guided the team into the competition.

France has been drawn alongside 2014 world champions Germany, reigning European champions Portugal, and one more team still to qualify through the play-offs.

Deschamps will soon become the longest-serving France coach, surpassing Michel Hidalgo's eight years and six months of service between January 1976 and June 1984.
