Meat prices in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania have skyrocketed in recent weeks, with a kilogram of beef now fetching between Tsh6,500 and Tsh8,500 ($3.70) at the Vingunguti Abattoir.

According to Mr. Joel Meshaki, chairman of a co-operative union for traders in livestock and livestock products at Vingunguti, the rise in prices is largely due to a slowdown in cattle supply at the market.

Mr. Meshaki explained that the average number of cattle slaughtered at Vingunguti per day has dropped from 500-650 to 400-450, contributing to the increase in meat prices.

Market analysts project that a kilogram of beef will cross the Tsh10,000 ($4) mark during the festive season, a prediction that has left many consumers worried.

As the festive season approaches, consumers in Dar es Salaam are bracing themselves for higher meat prices, with many struggling to afford the increasing costs.
