Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital after falling ill in custody at Kamiti Maximum Prison.
According to reports, Sonko had been taken back into custody on Monday night and was awaiting a bail hearing on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, his lawyers had sought to have him released on bail, citing that he needed urgent medical attention following an alleged assault by police during his dramatic arrest in Voi.
Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti had directed that Sonko's admission to hospital be approved by the prisons medical centre, stating, 'Due to the urgency of the medical treatment of accused one (Mike Sonko), though disputed, it's ordered that his admission to hospital will be certified by the prisons medical centre in the presence of his physician in order to be escorted to any other hospital for his medical attention as soon as that can be arranged.'
The Nairobi Governor and 11 others were charged with several counts of corruption relating to irregular payment of Ksh. 357.3 million, which they all denied.
