On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi following a warrant issued by DPP Noordin Haji. The arrest was part of corruption and misuse of office charges against Sonko, which he is facing in court.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Sonko attempted to escape before he was arrested. He was then put on a plane and airlifted to Nairobi.
ODM leader Raila Odinga has expressed his reservations about the manner in which Sonko was arrested, terming it 'humiliating'. Raila stated, 'I have reservations in the manner in which he (Sonko) was arrested. It was very humiliating to see him being arrested in such a fashion. The authorities could have an explanation on why they did it that way but it was not pleasing,' during an interview with Daily Nation.
Raila also emphasized that despite the charges against Sonko, he is entitled to a fair trial.
It is worth noting that Raila and Sonko have a history of disagreement, dating back to the 2017 general elections when Raila claimed that if he was elected President and Sonko elected Nairobi Governor, he would resign the next day.
Currently, Sonko is admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was rushed to after falling ill at the Kamiti Maximum Prison. Sources claim that the governor developed chest complications on Monday night.
