Published on December 10, 2019, Jumia's exit from Rwanda marks the third African country the company has left within a month, following Tanzania and Cameroon.
According to a notice sent to Rwandan customers, Jumia will suspend its on-demand delivery operations in Rwanda on January 9, 2020, after six years of operation in the country.
Albert Munyabugingo, Jumia's Managing Director for Rwanda, cited dwindling profits as the reason for the company's decision to shut down.
However, Munyabugingo failed to provide details on the number of jobs that will be lost, the impact of Jumia's exit on the Rwandan economy, and how customers will be affected by the abrupt change.
Notably, Jumia will continue to support buyers and vendors to trade on its classifieds portal, Jumia Deals, after the shutdown.
It is worth noting that Jumia's exit from Rwanda follows a similar trend in Tanzania, where the company cited dwindling profits as the reason for its decision to shut down.
