December 10, 2019, marked a significant development in the case of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Following a submission by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) representatives, security has been tightened at the hospital, citing concerns that Sonko might escape, similar to his previous incident at Shimo La Tewa.

According to the ODPP, Sonko had claimed to be sick while at Shimo La Tewa and managed to escape when taken to a Mombasa Hospital.

On Monday, December 9, Sonko was taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital after being examined by a doctor at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

Anti-corruption magistrate Douglas Ogoti ordered that Sonko could only be taken to the hospital once examined by a prison doctor to ascertain if he required medical attention.

Sonko's lawyer, Cecil Miller, stated that the governor developed complications after being engaged in a scuffle with police officers in Voi.

A letter from MP Shah Hospital, signed by Dr. Esther Nafula Wekesa, showed that Sonko was examined at the facility and complained of chest pain following an assault on Friday evening.

Magistrate Ogoti directed Sonko to receive medical treatment in the presence of prison authorities, and he will appear again in court on Wednesday to know the fate of his bail application.

County communications director Jacob Elkana claimed that the governor had been unwell since the altercation, stating that Sonko started developing complications when he was assaulted by police officers at Voi on Friday, 6th.
