On December 10, 2019, Airtel Kenya made a significant move in the telecoms industry by slashing data prices by up to 95 percent.
The new tariff, dubbed BeSureNaAirtel, requires customers to activate the package, which is priced cheaper especially for subscribers buying smaller units.
Under the new tariff, customers will pay a flat rate of Sh1 for 5MB, down from the normal Sh4.3 for every MB used.
Airtel Kenya's Managing Director, Prasanta Das Sarma, said the new rates were part of the company's commitment to continually invest in bringing more innovative products and services and enhance its network coverage.
"We are pleased to introduce the industry's best no-expiry rates for data and voice to all our customers," Mr. Sarma said during the launch.
The new rates are seen as a counter move following Safaricom's introduction of a new voice and data tariff in mid-October that cut peak time call costs by a third.
Airtel's new tariff includes a Sh2 calling rate per minute to all networks and is set to bring stiff competition to Safaricom's no-expiry internet packages.
