On December 10, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's health took a turn for the worse, prompting an emergency transfer to Nairobi Hospital. The governor had been remanded at Kamiti Maximum Prison, where he fell ill.

According to reports, Sonko's condition is critical, and he has been allowed to seek medical attention. This development comes after a tumultuous few days for the governor, who was arrested on Friday, December 6, 2019, and subsequently remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison.

However, due to security concerns, Sonko was later transferred to Kamiti Maximum Prison, where he fell ill. The transfer was reportedly necessitated by the actions of inmates who were victims of Sonko's rescue team members and city kanjos, who decided to cause havoc and exact revenge on the governor.

Sonko's lawyer, Cecil Miller, had earlier told the court that his client suffered broken ribs after being assaulted by police during his dramatic arrest. Miller had requested the court to allow Sonko to seek medical attention, citing the possibility of admission.

However, the prosecution raised concerns that Sonko might attempt to escape from hospital, citing an incident in 1998 when he mysteriously disappeared from Coast General Hospital while incarcerated at Shimo La Tewa Maximum Prison.
