Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu's transfer to Manyani Maximum Security Prison on Friday has raised concerns about the harsh conditions he will face.
According to sources, life in Manyani is a far cry from the comforts of Kamiti Maximum Prison, where Jowie was previously held.
Photos obtained by Mpasho show prisoners hanging their belongings precariously above their heads, with no beddings to speak of.
Prisoners are allowed outside for a few hours each day, but the yard is a barren field of red soil, with the surrounding area serving as an open breeding ground for pest infestation.
The prison's latrines pose a significant health risk, exposing prisoners to the dangers of disease outbreaks.
Furthermore, the kitchen's sufuria (cooking pot) has a gaping hole in the middle, making it barely usable.
Despite these harsh conditions, Jowie's transfer to Manyani has sparked a mix of reactions, with some calling for him to be treated fairly.
