December 10, 2019 - The family of murder suspect Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has expressed outrage after he was transferred from Kamiti Maximum Prison to Manyani Prison in Taita Taveta County.
Jowie has been in custody since 2018, following his arrest in connection with the murder of Monicah Kimani.
He was arrested after police failed to corroborate his claim of being shot in the shoulder at Langata, which he reported at Lang'ata Police Station.
On Tuesday, Jowie's family members broke down in court as he was denied bail, with Justice James Wakiaga citing several reasons for the denial.
According to Wakiaga, Jowie poses a threat to himself and others, given his access to guns and the fact that he owns a firearm.
Additionally, the court feared that Jowie might interfere with the case, and that he has no permanent residence, having previously lived in Jacque Maribe's house, which is now a crime scene.
Wakiaga also stated that there was no evidence to suggest that Jowie could not access specialized medical attention, despite his claims of needing such care.
Below are the reasons why Jowie was denied bail:
- He might interfere with the case.
- He is a threat to himself.
- He has no permanent residence.
- He is a dangerous person due to his ownership of a gun.
- There was no evidence to suggest he could not access specialized medical attention.
