Published on December 10, 2019, a day that will be remembered as a challenging one for murder suspect Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie.
Just two weeks before Christmas, Jowie was transferred from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison to Manyani prison in Voi, Taita Taveta County, leaving his family and lawyers questioning the reason behind the move.
According to a senior officer who wished to remain anonymous, Jowie was transferred last Friday after he was found with contraband during a random search.
Jowie's parents have expressed fear over the transfer, citing concerns that the move may be an attempt to harm their son.
"He has been taken to Manyani and his next appearance in court is in February. It's like they want to do something to him," Jowie's mother, Anastacia, said in an interview.
"The prison officer says it's a normal transfer but our lawyer says he has never heard of something like that," she added.
Prof Hassan Nandwa, Jowie's lead lawyer, stated that there had been no application for his transfer, leaving many to wonder about the true reason behind the move.
