On December 9, 2019, the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) announced plans to file a contempt of court case against Nairobi County government for defying a ruling suspending new parking fees.

The ruling, which temporarily suspended an increment on the parking fee from Sh200 to Sh400, was issued in response to Cofek's plea for a suspension order.

Cofek argued that the notice issued on the increase was too short, unreasonable, punitive, and discriminatory, and that no public participation was conducted before the decision to raise the charges was reached.

According to Cofek Secretary-General Stephen Mutoro, the county legal department was served with the court order on Thursday, last week, but the enhanced fee was still being levied.

City Hall Director of Parking Services Tom Tinega disputed Mutoro's claim, stating that they were yet to be served with the court order and that once received, they would be directed on the way forward.
