On a memorable Monday evening at the KCCA Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, Allan Okello's brace sealed a 2-0 win for Uganda over Somalia, keeping the hosts at the top of Group B with six points.
Earlier in the day, Eritrea staged a stunning upset by defeating Burundi 1-0, with Robel Kidale scoring the only goal at halftime. This victory marked Eritrea's return to the tournament after a seven-year absence, following a ban imposed in 2012.
Uganda's victory over Somalia was a one-sided affair, with the visitors struggling to find their footing. Somalia's captain, Ahmed Said Ahmed, and Omar Sharif Kale worked tirelessly to defend their goal, but Uganda's pressure eventually paid off in the 28th minute when Okello scored the opener.
Despite several chances, Uganda's wastefulness in front of goal continued, with Fahad Bayo's header in the 7th minute and Bright Anukali's looping shot in the 35th minute both going to waste.
It wasn't until the 67th minute that Okello sealed his brace, capitalizing on Somalia's tired defense. The match ended with Uganda's wastefulness lingering on to the final whistle.
Meanwhile, Eritrea's victory over Burundi was a significant upset, with the Burundians suffering their second consecutive loss and leaving them on the brink of elimination.
With this win, Eritrea has given themselves a glimmer of hope to advance to the last four, but they will need to beat Djibouti and Somalia in their remaining matches.
