On Sunday night, Yanga FC from Malindi turned on the class to win the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Coast Region boys' title at Bomu Stadium in Mombasa.
December 9, 2019, marked a historic day for the Malindi-based side as they defeated Kaya Stars from Kaloleni 4-0 in the final.
Yanga FC's victory earned them a spot at the national finals, which will be held at the same venue in June next year.
The team's coach, Abel Bellamy, expressed his happiness after guiding his charges to their maiden Chapa Dimba trophy.
"My boys were focused for the top prize and I'm happy we got the results we wanted," said Bellamy.
Meanwhile, Kaya Stars coach Ken Sitati blamed lack of concentration for their loss.
"We played well but conceded goals in quick succession which disoriented us but we live to fight another day," said Sitati.
Yanga FC's Mohamed Awadh opened the scoring with a fourth-minute strike, while Ali Mohammed and Lemmy Julo scored the second and third goals in the 47th and 53rd minutes, respectively.
Yanga FC's Julo, who emerged top scorer with three goals, completed his brace in the 70th minute to seal the win.
On the other hand, Kaya Stars' goalkeeper Stanley Dena made a series of fine saves to plant respect on the scoreline.
Additionally, Kwale Queens emerged champions in the girls category after beating Malindi Action 3-0.
Both Yanga FC and Kwale Queens took home Sh200,000, while the runners-up, Kaya Stars and Malindi Action, walked away with Sh100,000.
