Kenya's Clean Energy Ambitions: A Leap to Position 5 ¶
Kenya has made significant strides in clean energy production, climbing to position 5 globally, according to the Climatescope 2019 index report published on December 9, 2019.
The country's investments in solar, wind, and geothermal power have been instrumental in this achievement, with a total of KSh 140 billion invested in these sectors since 2018.
Kenya's ranking is a testament to the country's commitment to renewable energy sources, with solar, wind, and geothermal projects accounting for 38% of the country's capacity and 49% of generation in 2018.
The report noted that Kenya was in the process of shifting from feed-in tariffs to reverse auctions as its primary means for spurring new build, with the National Assembly approving draft legislation to make this change in August 2018.
Kenya's clean energy ambitions have been recognized globally, with the country emerging as a leader in geothermal energy production, ranking eighth globally with a power generation capacity of 763MW.
According to the report, India emerged top, followed by Chile and Brazil in that order, while China clinched the fourth position.
Kenya's remarkable progress in clean energy production is a significant achievement, and the country is expected to continue its efforts to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy sources.
