Heavy rains have caused widespread destruction and loss of life in Kisumu County, with two more people reported dead in the past few days.

According to reports, a 50-year-old man died in Ombaka area of Nyando Sub-county after being swept away by raging floods.

Another victim, a sand excavator in Nyamasaria, Kisumu East, lost his life while excavating sand in a swollen river.

These latest incidents bring the total number of reported deaths in the county to four, following the deaths of two women in Seme Sub-county.

As the rains continue to pound the region, residents are being urged to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a warning, advising residents to be on the lookout for potential floods and to take necessary precautions.

"The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the month of December with occasional breaks. Flooding and landslides may therefore be triggered by any substantial amount of rainfall in low-lying areas as well as over hilly grounds," said David Gikungu, a deputy director at the met. department.
