Published on December 9, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has lined up a formidable defense team to fight graft charges worth Ksh.357 million.
At the center of the defense team is lawyer Cecil Miller Jnr, who led the team of 12 lawyers in court. The team also includes Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, and Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo.
Other lawyers representing Sonko in the case are Nelson Havi, George Kithi, Alphonse Mutinda, Osundwa Michael, Harrison Kinyanjui, Kwanga Mboya, and two other advocates only identified as Mangolo and Philip.
The Governor and his co-accused pleaded not guilty to various graft-related charges, including conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, failure to comply with procurement laws, conflict of interest, abuse of office, and unlawful acquisition of public property.
They were also charged with deceiving principal, money laundering, and acquisition of proceeds of crime. The prosecution has opposed Governor Sonko's bail application but has no objection to the release of the other accused persons on bail.
