On December 9, 2019, the Canadian government announced a new initiative to support Kenyan youth in the blue economy.

Canadian High Commissioner Lisa Stadelbauer emphasized the importance of engaging youth in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) to acquire skills relevant to the blue economy market.

Speaking at a youth forum in Malindi, Stadelbauer urged young people to take advantage of courses offered by TVET institutions, highlighting the vast opportunities in the blue economy and its potential to address youth unemployment in Kenya.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable development, following the co-hosted Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, which brought together 17,000 delegates from 162 countries.

Stadelbauer noted that TVET institutions in Kenya should work closely with local industries to provide training for jobs that will be available within six months or a year.

Nina Chung, Chair of the Elimu Resource Centre, stated that the Malindi Youth Information Forum aimed to sensitize young people on available opportunities, enabling them to make informed career decisions.
