On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at a roadblock in Voi, Taita Taveta.

According to Police Spokesperson Charles Owino, Governor Sonko resisted arrest and became abusive, unruly, and violent, obstructing police officers from executing their duties.

During the arrest, Sonko allegedly assaulted and injured a senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment.

As a result, the National Police Service (NPS) will press assault charges against Governor Sonko, who is currently being detained pending arraignment on Monday to face charges over alleged misappropriation of public funds totaling Sh357 million through irregular contracts.
