Published on December 9, 2019, studies have shown that olives are good for the heart and may protect against osteoporosis and cancer.

The olive, also known as Mzeituni in Kiswahili, is a fruit with a hard pit and bitter flesh when unripe, turning brownish black when ripe.

While often treated as a vegetable in culinary terms, olives can be pickled when unripe and green, or enjoyed as a sweet and purplish-black fruit when ripe.

With over 10 types of olives, they not only provide olive oil for various uses but also yield olive wood kitchen utensils and decorative items.

Olives are an excellent source of Vitamin E and other powerful antioxidants, making them a great addition to a healthy diet.

Rich in monounsaturated fats and some antioxidants, olive oil is recommended for salads and cooking, with a taste that can be acquired despite its initial bitterness.

Find olive oil in major supermarkets for Sh200 - Sh2,000 and the olive fruit in upmarket and health product shops.
