On December 9, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko faced corruption charges at the Milimani Anti-corruption Court, surrounded by heavy security presence.

The Governor was arrested on December 6, 2019, in Voi by Anti-graft detectives following an order by the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji.

The DPP alleged that Sonko had a case to answer over the loss of Kshs357 million.

The arrest sparked a mixed reaction, with some calling for calm and others threatening to take to the streets in protest.

However, the police warned against illegal protests, stating that they would be met with the full force of the law.

Despite this, Sonko urged his supporters to give him moral support from home, rather than staging demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the Council of Governors called for a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss the fate of Nairobi County.
