Published on December 9, 2019, a viral video has sparked controversy over the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in Voi.

According to the footage, a police officer in a jungle green uniform appears to put his hand into the pocket of a senior officer as they struggle to restrain Sonko at Ikanga airstrip.

The officer was set to be airlifted to Nairobi to face graft charges, but the incident has raised questions about the conduct of the police officers involved.

In response to the allegations, the National Police Service issued a statement on Sunday, denying that the officer had stolen anything from his boss.

“The video clip doing rounds on social media highlighting what appears to be an act of pickpocketing by a police officer is a misrepresentation of facts and untrue,” the police service said.

“The Officer in Charge of Traffic Voi has confirmed that he was not pickpocketed. Equally, the police command in Voi has confirmed that the officer in question is disciplined and of high integrity,” the statement added.
