Employers are Watching: What You Need to Know ¶
Published on December 9, 2019
With the rise of social media, it's easier than ever for employers to get a glimpse into your personal life. But what are they looking for, and how can you protect your online reputation?
1. Your Online Persona ¶
Employers will often check your social media profiles to see how you describe yourself. This includes your 'about me' section, where you can showcase your skills, interests, and personality. Make sure your online persona aligns with your professional brand, and that your grammar and spelling are accurate.
2. Who You Follow ¶
Employers will also check who you follow on social media. This can give them an idea of your interests and values. Following industry leaders, companies, and relevant organizations can demonstrate your professionalism and enthusiasm for your field.
3. Your Photos and Captions ¶
What you post on social media can say a lot about you. Avoid using bad language or posting photos that could be misinterpreted. Instead, focus on sharing inspirational and purposeful content that showcases your personality and skills.
4. Where You've Been Tagged ¶
Employers may also check where you've been tagged in posts. This can give them an idea of your social life and behavior. Be mindful of what you're tagged in, and politely ask friends and family to refrain from tagging you in posts that could harm your reputation.
5. Posts on Your Wall ¶
Finally, employers may check the posts that appear on your wall, especially if you're on Facebook. Limit your engagement with posts that contain vulgar language, memes, or other content that could be seen as unprofessional.
