On December 9, 2019, the government was urged to enhance broadband coverage to stimulate the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in line with the Big Four Agenda.
According to Alex Fares, CEO of Unitel Services Limited, Kenya has made significant strides in improving internet connectivity. However, there are still gaps in reliability and consistency in the country's connectivity.
Reliable internet connectivity is essential for the successful implementation of e-Services across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and the movement of goods.
Mr. Fares emphasized the need for the government to establish proper broadband coverage in select regions, citing North Eastern Kenya as one of the areas with low coverage.
He urged the government to invest more in broadband infrastructure to realize tangible results from the growth of broadband infrastructure.
"The government has directed a lot of investment at infrastructure but that maybe not enough. It (the government) should make more efforts to realize to see results from the growth of broadband infrastructure," Mr. Fares said.
Other industry experts, including Denis Radonji, Strategy Director at Unitel, echoed Mr. Fares' sentiments, emphasizing the importance of ICT in achieving the Big Four Agenda.
"ICT is one of the enablers for the realisation of the Big Four agenda," Mr. Radonji said, adding that Unitel is working closely with the ICT ministry to support ICT growth.
