On Friday, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and eight others were arrested and subsequently appeared before Anti-Corruption Magistrate Douglas Ogoti on December 9, 2019.

Representing Governor Sonko were lawyers Cecil Miller, Kipchumba Murkomen, and Mutula Kilonzo Junior.

Charged alongside Sonko were Nelson Havi, George Kithi, Professor Tom Ojienda, Daniel Maanzo, Alphonse Mutinda, Osundwa Michael, Harrison Kinyanjui, and three others.

Lawyer for Muchemi, who was also charged, claimed that Muchemi and two others had presented themselves at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) but were turned away, only to be told to appear when summons were issued.

The lawyer requested that Muchemi and the two others appear in court the next day to plead to the charges.

They have denied the charge of conspiracy to commit corruption and embezzlement of public funds from Nairobi County.

The court was under tight security due to concerns that Sonko's fans would camp outside in solidarity with the governor.
