President Kenyatta has been asked to convene an emergency meeting with the Council of Governors to address the power vacuum in Nairobi County following the arrest of Governor Mike Sonko on Friday.
According to Article 182 of the Constitution, the Speaker of the County Assembly, Beatrice Elachi, will take over the functions of the Governor in the absence of a Deputy Governor.
However, Speaker Elachi does not enjoy the support of a majority of Members of County Assembly, having been impeached on September 6th, 2018, and reinstated by the court.
The Council of Governors, led by Chairperson Wycliffe Oparanya, is monitoring the situation and has asked President Kenyatta to convene an emergency meeting to ensure Nairobi County does not descend into crisis.
