Published on December 9, 2019, a study by NetCredit has shed light on the most common surnames in various countries across Africa and beyond.
The research, which was released this week, found Mwangi to be the most common surname in Kenya, a name predominantly used by the Agikuyu community that largely occupies the Central Kenya region.
The Agikuyu community is not the only one that uses the Mwangi name, as some clans from the Ameru and Aembu communities also bear the surname.
The study also revealed the most common surnames in other countries, including Akelo in Uganda, Juma in Tanzania, Nkurunziza in Burundi, Uwimana in Rwanda, Ali in Somalia, Tesfaye in Ethiopia, and Deng in South Sudan.
Outside of Africa, the study found Ibrahim to be the most common surname in Nigeria, Nkosi in South Africa, Mensah in Ghana, and Mohamed in Egypt.
Interestingly, the most common surname in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom is Smith, while in Brazil it is Da Silva, in China it is Wang, in Russia it is Ivanova, in Canada it is Smith, in Spain it is Garcia, in Italy it is Rossi, and in Germany it is Muller.
