Driver, Passenger Arrested over Wajir Bus Attack that Left 11 Dead

On December 6, 2019, a Mandera-bound bus was ambushed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Wajir County, Kenya, leaving 11 people dead.

Eleven people, including eight police officers, two civilians, and a doctor, lost their lives in the attack. Two police officers remain missing.

The bus, which was headed to Mandera from Nairobi, was flagged down by the attackers between Kutulo and Wargadud area in Wajir County. The assailants separated the passengers into two groups before shooting non-locals.

After releasing the bus, the driver, in a bid to save the remaining passengers, opted to turn back and drove to Kutulo Police Station.

Following the attack, the driver and a passenger were arrested and are set to be interrogated. The bus is being held at Kutulo Police Station, while the bodies recovered from the scene were taken to Wajir mortuary.
