On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at a roadblock in Voi, Taita Taveta.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), Governor Sonko will be charged with assault after he allegedly attacked a senior police officer during his arrest.
Police Spokesperson Charles Owino stated that the governor's actions were 'acts of lawlessness against lawful police action.'
During the arrest, Governor Sonko became abusive, unruly, and violent, attempting to resist the police officers and obstructing them from executing their duties.
As a result, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment.
