On December 6, 2019, the Council of Governors (CoG) asked President Kenyatta to convene an emergency meeting to address the power vacuum that could be created in Nairobi County following the arrest of Governor Mike Sonko.

According to Article 182 of the Constitution, Speaker of the County Assembly Beatrice Elachi will take over the functions of the Governor if there is a power vacuum. However, Speaker Elachi does not have the support of a majority of Members of County Assembly, having been impeached on September 6, 2018, and reinstated by the court.

CoG Chairperson Wycliffe Oparanya stated that the council is monitoring the situation and will reach out to President Kenyatta to convene an emergency summit to address the evolving situation.
