President Uhuru Kenyatta has maintained his stance against corruption, warning those involved in the vice that they will face the consequences.
Speaking at a church service in Ruiru, Kiambu County, on December 8, 2019, Uhuru said that those who embezzle public funds do so to enrich themselves, not the community.
"Tafadhali tusiingize siasa katika vita dhidi ya ufisadi. Wakati mtu anaiba mali ya umma hafanyi hivyo kwa niaba ya familia yake ama jamii. Kwa hivyo atakayepatikana abebe msalaba wake," he said.
Uhuru also called for the anti-graft agencies to be supported in their work, saying that they should be given the space to operate without interference.
"Kama taifa linalofuata sheria, turuhusu asasi husika za kukabiliana na ufisadi kufanya kazi yao na kuhakikisha kuwa washukiwa wote wanakabiliwa kwa usawa," he said.
The President's comments come just days after the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is accused of misappropriating KSh 357 million from the county's coffers.
Uhuru's stance on corruption has been met with mixed reactions, with some politicians defending Sonko and accusing the President of targeting his political opponents.
