On Saturday, the body of 13-year-old Boaz Odhiambo Ooko was retrieved from River Kuja in Homa Bay County, five days after he went missing.

Ooko, a pupil of Radienya Primary School, had been crossing the river when a boat he boarded capsized on Tuesday evening.

Area Chief Joseph Ogur confirmed that the body was found seven kilometres away from where the accident occurred.

According to Ogur, the section of the river where the accident occurred is used by residents to cross it during normal times.

"The death was caused by floods," Ogur said, adding that Ooko died because he could not swim when the boat had capsized.

Five other passengers who were in the boat survived the tragedy, and the body was moved to Manyatta Mortuary in Kobodo for post mortem.
