Heavy rains have caused the Miriu river to break its banks, displacing 176 families in Homa Bay County.
According to residents, the families from various villages in Wang'chieng' Location, Rachuonyo North sub-county, have been forced to quit their homes due to the raging floods.
Area Chief Peter Agunga warned that the situation is expected to worsen, with more families likely to be affected.
"The floods are increasing and more people are likely to be affected," Agunga said.
Homa Bay County Commissioner Harman Shambi decried the state of floods in various parts of the county, particularly in Rachuonyo North and Ndhiwa sub-counties.
Shambi urged residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives.
"I urge residents in the flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives," Shambi said.
Residents are currently camping at Osodo Primary School, where they are facing difficulties.
"We are undergoing a lot of difficulties caused by the floods. More families are still vacating their homes to camp at Osodo," said Joe Ochola, a resident.
