Published on December 8, 2019, Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) is under heavy police presence ahead of Governor Mike Sonko's court appearance.

Major roads within the CBD have been sealed off by police vehicles since Saturday night, with several roads leading to Sonko's County government offices, the Supreme Court, and President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto's office in the CBD also restricted.

According to Nairobi News, police expect hundreds or thousands of Sonko supporters to gather in the city on Monday to show solidarity with the governor, but have warned them against causing unrest.

“Police are aware of a group of individuals mobilising to cause civil unrest, let any demonstration be done on strict adherence with the law,” the police stated.

On Thursday, Sonko was arrested by 150 policemen along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered his arrest for corruption-related crimes.

Since his arrest, Sonko has released a statement denying any wrongdoing and urging his supporters to remain calm.
