December 8, 2019, marked a sad day for Tanzania as the country lost a prominent business leader, Ali Mufuruki. The 55-year-old chairman of Infotech Investment Group passed away in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was receiving medical treatment.
According to Sanjay Rughani, chairman of the CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt), Mufuruki fell ill in Dar es Salaam and was rushed to The Aga Khan Hospital. He was later evacuated to South Africa on Saturday afternoon.
Ali Mufuruki was a respected businessman, author, and philanthropist. He served as the board chairman for Vodacom Tanzania and Wananchi Group Holdings, and was a former chairman of Mwananchi Communications Ltd, a subsidiary of the Nation Media Group. He was also a trustee of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies and co-authored the book 'Tanzania's Industrialisation Journey, 2016-2056.'
CEOrt members received the news of Mufuruki's passing in a message from Rughani, who said, 'Dear board members: This is news I would never have wanted to break to you but our dear friend Ali Mufuruki passed on last night at Morningside Hospital, Johannesburg in South Africa…'
